PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Police are investigating the reported theft of a statue and other vandalism at the Fairmount Cemetery on Houlton Road.

Around noon on Sunday, Sept. 7, a man reported that his wife’s headstone had been vandalized and that a 30-pound statue of a moose that had been glued on top was stolen.

According to the local police log, the man indicated that at least three other headstones were vandalized with some solar lights broken.

Officer Wayne Selfridge, of the Presque Isle Police Department, was assigned to investigate.

The family also has sought help, via Facebook, in recovering the statue.

Kelly Langley, daughter of Denise (Grenier) Hill, posted the following on her Facebook page: “This weekend my family discovered that someone had gone to Fairmount Cemetery and stole a bronze moose statue that sat upon my mother’s gravestone. It has been there for 16 years. It wasn’t just a statue to us. It was one of the last gestures and signs of love that we as a family could show to my mom, as she loved moose. I am not sure what the statue is worth to someone else, but I do know what it meant to us.”

“I am beyond devastated, violated and sick to my stomach. I beg everyone, if you know someone who has my mom’s statue, please tell them to bring it back — just bring it back,” wrote Langley.

Anyone with information on the theft/vandalism is asked to call the Presque Isle Police Department at 764-4476.
