SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — A 27-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon in a golf cart accident at The Links at Outlook golf course.

South Berwick Police Chief Dana Lajoie said the golf cart was traveling downhill on the 14th hole when the driver lost control and the vehicle began to roll.

The passenger, later identified as Eric S. Sullivan, 27, of Stoughton, Massachusetts, was thrown from the cart, which at one point rolled over him, Lajoie said Wednesday afternoon.

Sullivan suffered massive head trauma.

A medical helicopter initially dispatched to the course was canceled while en route.

The driver of the golf cart sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene, police said.

The golf cart was traveling in a cart path when the driver lost control. The emergency call came in shortly before 3 p.m.

“It appears the group was not familiar with the course,” Lajoie said.

Sullivan was with at least three other golfers playing on the 18-hole golf course. After the accident, other members of the party sat in stunned silence as emergency crews processed the scene a few hundred yards away.

Berwick police, South Berwick police and the South Berwick Fire Department responded to the emergency call. The Maine Warden Service helped police reconstruct the accident, which remains under investigation, police said.

The Outlook is located on Route 4 just outside South Berwick’s downtown. Part of the course also falls within Berwick.

Attempts Wednesday to reach golf club officials for comment were not successful.
