PITTSFIELD, Maine — Maine Central Institute will hold its fifth annual Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony during Homecoming Weekend at 5 p.m. Sept. 20 in Maine Central Institute’s Trustee Memorial Student Center.
Patricia Skaling, Khano Smith, Peter Susi and C. Nelson Corey make up this year’s honorees.
Skaling participated in field hockey, softball and cheerleading at Maine Central Institute and was a member of the first girls ski team as a senior. She earned her first United States Field Hockey Association rating in 1962 at age 17. In 1973, she earned a USFHA Northeast Sectional rating and was chosen to serve as USFHA Umpiring Chairperson for the state of Maine.
Skaling worked closely with the Maine Principals’ Association to establish pay equity for field hockey officials (prior to Title IX), and served as statistician for the Maine Principals’ Association for field hockey and girls basketball for Eastern Maine. Skaling was inducted into the Maine Field Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.
Smith played four years of soccer at Maine Central Institute and later competed at Champlain College and Lees-McRae College. Smith then played more than 30 games for the Bermuda National Team and scored seven goals. He also appeared in seven FIFA World Cup qualifying matches for Bermuda, scoring three goals.
In 2005, Smith played four seasons with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer. In 2011, Smith retired and earned his United States Soccer Federation “B” coaching license. He is a member of the Revolution Academy coaching staff for the Under-18s division.
Susi played basketball, football and ran track while at Maine Central Institute. He was the co-captain of the football team and was a member of the starting lineup in Maine Central Institute’s first Eastern Maine basketball tournament.
Susi attended Amherst College, where he played basketball and participated in crew, helping the Lord Jeffs win two regattas his senior year. Susi has continued to run and swim regularly all his life.
He has practiced law in California since 1977. He also has served as an adjunct professor at Santa Barbara College of Law.
Corey, who will be inducted posthumously, was a teacher and coach at Maine Central Institute from 1948-54. His football team won four Maine Preparatory School Championships and had two undefeated seasons.
Corey went on to become head football coach at Bowdoin College and start the first lacrosse program in the state. He later served as athletic director at the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut.
After retiring in 1980, Corey was presented with the Martin William Sounders Award by the New England Prep School Athletic Council. In 1997, he was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2002, he was one of the initial inductees into the Bowdoin College Athletic “Hall of Honor.”
