WINTERPORT, Maine — A motorcyclist suffered facial injuries when he turned his bike into the path of an oncoming sedan in Winterport on Saturday morning, according to a Waldo County sheriff’s deputy.

Robert Wright, 55, of Winterport, was riding his motorcycle north on Kendall Road at around 9:10 a.m. when he attempted to turn left onto a driveway at the top of a hill, Deputy Darrin Moody said at the scene.

The driver of a Pontiac sedan, traveling in the opposite direction, saw the motorcycle turning into her path as she crested the hill. She slammed on the car’s brakes and sharply turned right in an attempt to avoid striking the motorcycle head on.

The motorcycle scraped along the side of the car, knocking Wright to the ground. The car’s driver side was scratched and dented, and the rear-left tire popped.

“[Wright] said he didn’t see the car and started to turn and it was there,” Moody said.

Neither the driver of the car nor the two 7-year-olds riding with her were injured, according to Moody.

The Pontiac driver’s response likely prevented a more serious crash, which could have sent the motorcyclist over the hood of the vehicle, Moody said.

Wright was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with facial injuries that aren’t believed to be serious, Moody said.

The area was cleared about 30 minutes after the crash.
