ELLSWORTH, Maine — Alcohol may have been a factor in a single-vehicle accident that sent a Hancock woman to the hospital and shut down a portion of the North Road for several hours Sunday evening, police said.
Stacie Alley, 40, was traveling toward Ellsworth just after 5 p.m. when the 2011 Jeep Liberty she was operating went off the road, then struck and snapped in half a telephone pole that came to rest on the driver’s side, according to Sgt. Shawn Willey of the Ellsworth Police Department.
Alley was taken by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital but was flown by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor in serious condition, Willey said late Sunday night.
The accident occurred at the 600 block on the North Road. Crews with Emera Maine were on the scene to response to live electrical wires in the road.
According to the power outage map on the Emera Maine website, several customers near the scene of the accident were without power. Willey said the pole was expected to be replaced Monday morning.
Willey said alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the accident but said excessive speed was not likely. Alley was wearing a seat belt at the time.
The Jeep was totaled, and the accident remains under investigation. An accident reconstruction specialist with the Ellsworth Police Department was on the scene Sunday evening, Willey said.
