PORTLAND, Maine — A bicyclist who was hit by a car crossing Forest Avenue in Portland on Sunday night may have been drinking, according to Portland police.
Steven Bowie, 43, of Portland was taken to Maine Medical Center after the crash, which occurred in the area of 1871 Forest Ave. about 7:45 p.m. Sunday.
In a Monday news release, Lt. Cliff Strout of the Portland Police Department called the incident “a serious motor vehicle accident” in which Bowie crossed the roadway in the path of a 2005 Chevy Impala driven northbound by 61-year-old Steven Bickford of Westbrook.
Bowie has since been released from the hospital and Bickford was not injured, Strout said. He noted that the crash is still under investigation.
“Speed does not appear to be a factor. Alcohol may be a factor for the bicyclist,” said Strout.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call the Portland Police Traffic Division at 874-8532.
