BELFAST, Maine — Police are asking dog owners to make sure their pets are licensed and up to date on their shots, after the department received multiple calls about several dangerous dog incidents in the last week.
One dog owner was issued citations for having a dangerous, unlicensed dog last week after police were called by Waldo County General Hospital officials, according to Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham of the Belfast Police Department. A dog had bitten a pedestrian who was on the Harbor Walk, and that person went for medical treatment.
“If a dog bites you, you want to know if it’s had its shots,” Cunningham said.
Over the weekend, he said, police also were called about a dog that had gotten loose near Durham Street. When they arrived, the unlicensed dog was snarling, growling and was difficult to catch. Its owner was cited for having a dangerous, unlicensed dog after the dog eventually was caught.
Another dog owner was issued citations after a dog allegedly grabbed a neighbor’s hen and ran off with it, Cunningham said, adding the hen ultimately got away safely, though short a few tail feathers.
“People should get their dogs licensed,” he said.
