PORTLAND, Maine — Police continue to search for the driver of a vehicle involved in a high-speed pursuit that terminated on Allen Avenue Thursday.

A passenger in the vehicle, Carlos Alcantara, 33, of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, has been charged with possession of bath salts by Maine Drug Enforcement Agency officers, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

The driver, Ashley Gagne, 24, of Lewiston, has not been found as of 3 p.m. Thursday, according to McCausland.

“Drug agents plan to question her when she is found,” McCausland said.

The chase ensued when police attempted to pull a vehicle over for speeding on the Maine Turnpike in Gray. The silver sedan took off at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

The vehicle exited the turnpike at Exit 48 and the chase continued along Riverside Street, Warren and Forest Avenues before terminating at the corner of Allen Avenue and Knight Street.

Alcantara and Gagne subsequently fled the scene, but Alcantara was located and taken into custody on Washington Avenue, about three blocks from where the vehicle was abandoned, McCausland said.

The spokesman added the car was a rental vehicle from Massachusetts.
