ROCKLAND, Maine — A 23-year-old South Thomaston woman could get more time in jail after police say she hid drugs inside a book while being held at the Knox County Jail.
Briannah Parlin made her initial court appearance Friday in Rockland District Court on a charge of trafficking in prison contraband. Judge Susan Sparaco ordered her held until she posts $1,000 in cash for bail.
Parlin remained at the jail Saturday morning.
According to an affidavit filed by a Maine Drug Enforcement Agency officer in the Rockland court, another inmate at the jail asked on Monday to look at a book in the booking area of the jail. Parlin, who was present, said that the inmate wanted the top book on the shelf. Correction officers reportedly became suspicious and sent the two inmates back to their cells and examined the book.
The affidavit quotes jail staff as saying that Parlin had earlier asked to look at that book titled “Mockingjay” but later said she had not read it when asked how it was. “Mockingjay” is the final book in “The Hunger Games” trilogy. Inside the book, officers allegedly found pages stuck together with toothpaste and a strip of suboxone hidden between the pages. There also were notes written on the page that stated “They can’t stop me,” according to the affidavit.
Parlin was questioned and denied having put the suboxone there. The MDEA officer charged her Wednesday with the trafficking offense.
She was already at the jail for failure to pay fines on prior theft and violating condition of release charges, according to the jail.
The other inmate has not been charged.
