ORONO, Maine — The Maine Black Bears scored three goals in the final 25 minutes to snap a five-game losing streak to the Bryant College Bulldogs with a 3-1 field hockey victory Saturday.
Rosie Bird’s goal six minutes into the game gave Bryant the lead, but Maine responded in the second half with goals by Sydney Veljacic, Nicole Sevey and Holly Stewart.
Veljacic deflected an Annabelle Hamilton shot for her first goal of the season at the 51:26 mark.
Two minutes later, Sevey tallied a marker on a nearly identical play as the first. Off a penalty corner, Hamilton managed to get hold of the ball in the circle, fired it and Sevey tipped it past goalie Megan Hancock.
Emma Cochran made five saves for Maine (2-5) and Hancock had 12 for Bryant.
Football
Mass. Maritime 26, Maine Maritime 20
At Castine on Saturday, Massachusetts Maritime stopped Maine Maritime at the 18-yard line on its second overtime possession and Mass. quarterback John Trudelis ran in from the 2-yard line to give the visiting Buccaneers the victory over the Mariners in the first OT game in the Admiral’s Cup.
Joseph DiBiase sparked the Mariners with 126 rushing yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. Jacob Dooland added 117 yards on 11 carries and QB Michael Fahey had 91 yards on 29 carries.
The Mariners opened the game with a six-play 68 scoring drive capped by DiBiase’s three-yard TD run. DiBiase added a 54-yard scoring jaunt with 1:15 left in the first quarter.
The Bucs responded in the second half when Bobby Rosano returned the kickoff 91 yards for a TD and put together a 69-yard drive capped by Trudel’s six-yard TD run.
The two teams then traded TDs to send the game into overtime.
Men’s Soccer
MMA 0, NEC 0 (2OT)
At Castine on Saturday, Maine Maritime Academy’s Marshall Spear made 14 saves to help the Mariners tie New England College.
NEC goalie Tenzin Khenrab made five saves. MMA is now 4-3-1 and NEC is 2-4-1.
Husson 2, Colby-Sawyer 0
At Bangor on Saturday, Cam Libbey took a cross from a Phil Frost, who was running down the right flank, and hit the ball to the lower right corner as the goalie was coming across to give the Eagles the winning edge seven minutes into the game.
Martin Lidholm provided an insurance goal in the 79th minute off assists from Josh Bean and Frost.
Brian Potter made eight saves for Husson (4-3) and Nick Austin had six for Colby-Sawyer (3-3-1).
Women’s Soccer
Rhode Island 3, Maine 0
At Kingston, Rhode Island, on Sunday, Simone Hansen and Nicole Brennan each scored a first-half goal en route to the win for the Rams, now 8-1-1.
Rhode Island outshot Maine 17-9 with Claudia Dube-Trempe making eight saves for the Bears, who fell to 2-6-1.
Lindsey Reilly made four saves for the Rams.
NEC 1, MMA 0
At Castine on Saturday, Jaycie Triandafilou snuck a shot just beyond Maine Maritime Academy goalkeeper Kelsie Hilton in the 61st minute to give New England College the victory.
Tricia Sardagnola finished with three saves for NEC (7-1) and Hilton had three for MMA (2-4).
Colby-Sawyer 2, Husson 1
At Bangor on Saturday, Tallon Tomasi converted a corner kick from Lizzie Joergensen late in the second half to give Colby-Sawyer the victory.
Rachel Quaye scored after a scramble in front of the net to at the 51st minute to give Colby-Sawyer the lead, but Husson tied it eight minutes later when Desir’ee Hamler took a pass from Kirsten Wood and hit a perfectly placed ball into the upper right corner from 25 yards out.
Jess Poulin made 10 saves for Husson (2-4) and Karley Hamilton had five for Colby-Saywer (2-5).
Bowdoin 4, UMF 0
At Brunswick on Sunday, the Polar Bears scored all four goals in the first half to improve to 5-0 while UMaine-Farmington slipped to 1-4.
Kiersten Turner, Amanda Kinneston, Julia Bottone and Jill Rathke each scored for Bowdoin, which outshot UMF 22-0.
UMF’s Sam Hatch made nine saves.
