LEWISTON, Maine — Crews from all over Maine battled a massive fire in Lewiston on Tuesday night. Flames broke out around 7 p.m., displacing 11 families.

It took several hours to get the flames under control. On Wednesday morning, Lewiston firefighters were back on the scene, as smoke could be seen coming from the building. A police car was also parked outside the building.

The Red Cross is working to help the families left homeless from this fire. The building contained 17 units, 11 of which were occupied.

While firefighters have not discussed a cause for this fire, the flames are believed to have started on the third or fourth floor.

CBS 13 spoke with several witnesses to this fire, who said watching another apartment building go up in flames brings back a lot of bad memories. This fire is just a couple of blocks from a series of arson fires in Lewiston last year.

“It’s hard to comprehend what’s going on but you know seeing all these firefighters out here you got be thankful for these guys,” said Claire L’Heureux, of Lewiston. “I really feel for the families. I live further down and I just, my heart goes out to them. It’s just crazy. It shouldn’t be this way.”

The state fire marshals office is investigating as well.
