CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy Mariners scored two first-half goals en route to a 2-0 men’s soccer victory over the Bates College Bobcats Tuesday.
The Mariners took the early lead after three straight corner kicks by Gabriel Warren, with the third headed in by Kyle Haslam.
MMA added its second goal when Jonathan Reeks settled a ball played by Christopher Gilman and beat his defender, finding the bottom right of the net.
MMA’s Marshall Spear finished with 10 saves and Sam Polito had three for Bates.
Colby 2, USM 0
At Gorham, junior Dan Vogel and senior Charlie Dupee each scored goals late in the second half to lead the Colby by the University of Southern Maine.
The score remained locked at 0-0 until the 74th minute when Vogel broke through for the first goal of the game and his first of the season. He blasted in the eventual game winner when sophomore Luke Andrews deftly chested the ball to a wide-open Vogel in the box. Vogel one-timed the ball into the top right of the corner for a 1-0 Colby lead. Dupree added the insurance goal less than a minute later.
Senior goalkeeper Cody Funkhouser made six saves for Colby (4-3) and sophomore Elijah Leverett made four for USM (1-7-1).
Bowdoin 2, UNE 0
At Brunswick, Nick DiStefano scored off a rebound at 35:20 and Dias Costa added a goal two minutes later to lift Bowdoin by the University of New England.
Bowdoin (3-3) outshot UNE (3-3-1) with Bowdoin’s Noah Safian making two saves and UNE’s Aidan McParland finishing with 12.
