THOMASTON, Maine — Voters will be asked at a special town meeting in November whether a dog park should be established on town-owned land.
The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Monday night to schedule the special town meeting for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the American Legion Hall.
The proposal from the Thomaston Dog Park Committee was to create the park on town-owned land on the east side of the Village Cemetery.
The proposal will not cost the town any money. If voters give approval, the committee plans to create a nonprofit organization that will raise the money to erect a fence around the property.
The committee was appointed by selectmen last year to come up with a recommendation.
Town Clerk Joan Linscott said that the demand for a dog park has increased this year since neighboring Rockland closed Snow Marine Park early in the summer. She said several people from Rockland have called and expressed an interest in helping Thomaston establish a park.
A public hearing on the Thomaston proposal is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 27.
The closest formal dog parks to Thomaston are in Camden and Belfast.
The Rockland City Council discussed a dog park earlier this month, and councilors Louise MacLellan-Ruf and Frank Isganitis agreed to work with resident Suzanne Ward to look at possible locations for one in the city.
Rockland has discussed a possible dog park since 2009.
