CAMDEN, Maine — Property owners should be receiving their tax bills next week after the town set the tax rate Tuesday night.

The rate was set at $14.43 per $1,000 of assessed property, which is 2.8 percent more than the 2013 rate of $14.04.

The increase is due to increased money both for schools and municipal operations. The county share of the budget was down.

Of the $15.9 million in taxes being assessed in Camden, nearly $10 million (63 percent) will go to the schools. Nearly $1.1 million (7 percent) will go to Knox County. The remaining $4.8 million will be for municipal operations.

The first tax payment is due Nov. 1 and the second portion on May 1. Interest of 7 percent is charged for late payments.

The largest taxpayer in town is Quarry Hill Association which is a housing development that includes an assisted living complex. Quarry Hill is assessed at nearly $13 million and pays about $185,000 in taxes.
