WHITEFIELD, Maine — A Gardiner man suffered serious injuries after he lost control of his motorcycle on Mills Road on Sunday evening, according to police.

Kenneth Black, 50, and his 47-year-old wife, Laurie, had slowed to avoid a deer in the roadway when the accident occurred, according to Lt. Rand Maker of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Kenneth and Laurie Black were on separate motorcycles, Maker said. Neither of them were wearing helmets.

Maker said the pair had slowed to avoid the deer, which had just been struck by another vehicle, but the animal moved into the path they had taken to avoid striking it.

Laurie Black was able to maintain control of her motorcycle but Kenneth Black lost control, striking both the deer and his wife’s bike, Maker said.

Kenneth Black suffered a serious head injury and was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, while Laurie Black complained of head and knee pain but refused a trip to the hospital.

Maker said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident, which closed Mills Road for about two hours.
