BANGOR, Maine — A local woman was sentenced Tuesday at the Penobscot Judicial Center to four years in prison with all but six months suspended in connection with a stabbing during the Fourth of July fireworks in 2012.
Audrieanna Karnes, 22, of Bangor pleaded no contest to two counts of aggravated assault, both Class B crimes, in a plea agreement with Michael Roberts, deputy district attorney for Penobscot County.
No contest pleas result in convictions.
In addition to prison time, Superior Court Justice William Anderson sentenced Karnes to two years of probation, according to Roberts.
In effect, Anderson imposed a time-served sentence since Karnes has been held at the Penobscot County Jail unable to post the $50,000 cash bail since March 2014.
Roberts said Monday that when Karnes was located by local law enforcement, she was incarcerated at a California jail serving a sentence for the theft of a vehicle. Roberts said that he did not have any information about her crime in the Golden State or where she was incarcerated.
The incident that led to Karnes’ conviction began about 9:45 p.m. July 4, 2012, when Bangor police were called to the area of the Dunkin’ Donuts on Main Street for reports of two women fighting, according to a previously published report.
At some point during the fight, Karnes intervened, pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the women — once in the back and once in the chest, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said after the incident.
The assailant was described as a “rugged” white female with curly, shoulder-length red hair. She was wearing a dark shirt and dark pants at the time of the fight, according to police.
The victim in the stabbing was an 18-year-old woman from Bangor whose injuries were not life-threatening but did require stitches, according to Roberts.
A then 42-year-old Glenburn man tried to stop the assault and was cut on the hand, according to a previous report.
Karnes fled the scene and the state. She was not located until 2013, Roberts said.
