VAN BUREN, Maine — A member of the Van Buren Board of Selectmen was charged Thursday in connection with the theft of several thousand dollars from his employer, according to Aroostook County Chief Deputy Sheriff Darrell Crandall.
Justin Martin, 31, faces a charge of Class C theft for allegedly removing several thousand dollars from the cash register and a safe at the Van Buren Tulsa gas station over a period of several years, Crandall said in a news release Thursday afternoon.
Martin was an employee at the business until September, Crandall said, and was arrested Sept. 29 in connection with the crime.
He posted bail at the time and will make his initial appearance in Caribou Superior Court on Dec. 16, when he faces five years in prison if convicted.
The investigation was handled by the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department for the Van Buren Police Department because of Martin being a member of the Van Buren Board of Selectmen, Crandall said.
Van Buren Town Manager Dan McClung was out of the office Thursday, and a town employee answering the phone was unaware of Martin’s status on the board.
