Boston hired by Maine Red Claws

PORTLAND, Maine — The Maine Red Claws on Thursday announced that Evans Boston has joined the organization as the new director of communications, public relations and community relations.

Boston replaces Will McClaran, who accepted a job in the NBA with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Boston spent the last 7 years at WGME-TV in Portland as sports anchor and reporter. He won numerous awards for his reporting, including back-to-back Maine Association of Broadcasters awards for best sports feature (2013-14).

A native of York, Boston graduated from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism.

Ryan signs long-term deal with Senators

The Ottawa Senators made a long-term commitment to Bobby Ryan on Thursday, signing the right winger to a seven-year, $50.75 million contract extension.

Ryan, who was traded by the Anaheim Ducks to the Senators in July 2013, delivered 23 goals and 48 points in 70 games for Ottawa in his first season. In 448 career games, Ryan has 170 goals, 337 points and a plus-47 rating.

The Senators also named defenseman Erik Karlsson as their captain. He becomes the third player to wear the ‘C’ on his sweater in the past three season. Karlsson, in his sixth season with the Senators, follows Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson in the leadership role.

Miller takes leave as Butler coach

Two days before the start of practice for the 2014-15 season, Butler coach Brandon Miller was granted a leave of absence for medical reasons, the school announced Thursday.

Assistant Chris Holtmann will take over as interim coach. It was not known when Miller might return to the job or the nature of his medical issues.

Braun undergoes procedure on injured thumb

The Milwaukee Brewers are hoping a medical procedure done on outfielder Ryan Braun’s right thumb will alleviate the nerve problem.

Dr. Vernon Williams of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles used cryotherapy, which involved applying extreme cold that freezed the nerve tissue near the thumb, on Thursday in a non-surgical attempt to treat the injury.

Braun, the 2011 National League Most Valuable Player, batted .266 with 19 homers and 81 RBIs in 135 games this year.
