PORTLAND, Maine — Country music star Tim McGraw wants you to know he knows where Portland Maine is.
The singer has taken some heat for his new hit song, which mentions Portland, but not in the most flattering way.
McGraw’s song lyrics in question are: “Portland, Maine. I don’t know where that is, and I don’t want to know. I don’t want to know.”
On Friday, McGraw was on WPOR talking about his new album. He explained that he does know where Maine’s largest city is; in fact, he’s been here and he loves it here. He says the song is about the difficulty of moving on after a break-up.
“The metaphor of the song is the guy is just afraid to move anywhere in a relationship and in his life. He could have said anything and he wouldn’t have wanted to leave. The cool thing about it, the cool thing about Portland, Maine is that it sings so well,” McGraw said.
McGraw says “Portland, Maine” is his favorite song on the album and he can’t wait to get back here. Country music critics say the song could win song of the year.
