Pasta dinner, auction
ORONO — The All Things Pasta Plus Trimmings: Community Dinner and Live Auction will take place 4:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Keith Anderson Community House, 19 Bennoch Road.
The dinner will be prepared by Gateway Seniors “chefs” and will include appetizers, baked lasagna, baked ziti, stuffed shells and other pasta dishes, coleslaw, green salad, garlic bread, desserts and beverages. Those who wish may assist by preparing a dish, donating an auction item or purchasing a ticket. The cost is $7, $5 children 6 to 12, free to children under 6, $20 families. Indian place names
BANGOR — What do Passadumkeag, Mattawamkeag and Kenduskeag have in common? How about Seboomook, Chesuncook and Aroostook? Many names on the Maine map are of Indian origin, but few Mainers really know what they mean.
Penobscot Tribal Historian James Francis will explain it all 7-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the Sea Dog Restaurant.
The program marks the return of the Penobscot Valley Chapter of Maine Audubon to the restaurant.
Nonviolent communication
BANGOR — A nonviolent communication workshop, “Building Sustainable and Vibrant Relationships: An Introduction to the Basics of Nonviolent Communication” offered by Peggy Smith, co-founder of the Maine Nonviolent Communication Network and Open Communication, will take place 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18-l9, at the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine, 96 Harlow St.

Candidates’ debate
BANGOR — Beal College will host a debate between State Senate incumbent Geoff Gratwick and Cary Weston 10 a.m.-noon Thursday, Oct. 9, at the college, 99 Farm Raod. Book talk
BANGOR — Eastern Maine Development Corporation will host Bangor native Alexander Moore, chief development officer for DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C. and author of “The Food Fighters,” 8-9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, Cross Insurance Center. Moore will share how the principles used in his organization can be applied in this region.

Blessing of the pets
BREWER — The sixth annual blessing of the pets will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at First Congregational Church of Brewer, UCC, 35 Church St. Bring a photo of your pet; live pets are not allowed. Proceeds from the evening’s offering will be donated to the Animal Orphanage in Old Town.
History gathering
BUCKSPORT — Buck Memorial Library invites the public to the last event in its series of gatherings featuring the early history of the Bucksport area 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the library.
Benjamin Blodget will show slides of early Bucksport houses. Richard Tennant, Larry Wahl and Phyllis Wardwell also will give presentations.
The Memory Board will feature the Frye Tavern, 1789-1972.

Justice for the River
INDIAN ISLAND — The public is invited to join members of the Penobscot Nation and supporters for a special concert, Justice for the River, a speak out, and fundraiser to benefit Penobscot Nation’s defense of its ancestral River, 2-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Sockalexis Arena.
Suggested donation is $20. Proceeds will be donated to Penobscot Nation River Defense Fund.
Justice for the River will feature local musicians Timbered Lake with music from their new CD, “Water Carriers” folk singer Peter Neils, Penobscot-grown Eric Green, Mitchell and Mann with special guest Nick Bear and Nikoa Parsons, and the legendary Grammy Award-winning musician, Joanne Shenandoah.
The event also will include a children’s art table, silent auction, food court and speeches by stewards of the water.
Silent auction items will include donations of native art, beaded jewelry, photographs, music, and a pair of wampum earrings donated by Southern Wabanaki relatives from Mashantucket, and much, much more.
This event is organized by Dawnland Defense, members of the Penobscot Nation and allies of the Penobscots statewide.

Outing after the concert
ORONO — Gateway Seniors Without Walls will meet at Margarita’s on Mill St. in downtown Orono after the Bangor Symphony Orchestra at the Collins Center for the Arts, University of Maine, ends at 6 p.m. Those who wish to have dinner may register with Norma at 945-5763.
Quilt show
STETSON — The Clueless Quilters will hold its quilt 9 a.m.-3 pm. Saturday, Oct 11, at the Meeting House on Route 222. The event will feature a craft sale and quilter’s yard sale. Lunch will be available. Several small quilts will be raffled. Admission is free, donations will be accepted.
