SMITHFIELD, Maine — A teenage boy has been charged with criminal trespass and could face more charges in connection with half a dozen camp burglaries in late September, according to police.
The burglaries occurred in the area of Lakeview and North Shore drives in Smithfield between Sept. 20 and 26, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.
The 13-year-old suspect’s name was not disclosed because he is a juvenile.
Lancaster said investigative efforts led to the boy being identified as a possible suspect. Among the items stolen from the camps were loose change, a knife and a flashlight.
The chief deputy said all the camps were either closed for the season or had nobody presently residing at them. There was forced entry via removing windowpanes to several camps while others were entered without force.
“We believe that the male juvenile was exploring,” Lancaster said.
On Thursday, the teen was interviewed by Det. Michael Ross, and Lancaster said the boy confessed to the burglaries and was cooperative.
The teen was charged with criminal trespass and released to his parents’ custody, Lancaster said. Additional charges are possible after the case is reviewed by the district attorney’s office.
