GRAY, Maine — After a dry September, October got off to a somewhat wet start, with heavy rain and thunderstorms hitting the state Tuesday night into Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, the highest rainfall totals were seen in midcoast portions of the state.

Bath saw about 1.6 inches of rain, along with New Portland, according to forecaster Margaret Curtis.

Westport Island and Dresden reported seeing an inch of rain, but Curtis said Portland reported around a quarter of an inch.

Heavy thunderstorms prompted the weather service to issue a severe thunderstorm warning for Knox, Kennebec and Waldo counties, but that alert was lifted around 9:30 Wednesday morning.

The storms were expected to wind down throughout Wednesday morning, with the Bangor area seeing the storms rumble through early in the morning. Cooler, drier weather is expected for the rest of the week.

Curtis said the rain was needed after a fairly dry September.
