BANGOR, Maine — A 26-year veteran of the Bangor Police Department is hanging up his badge, Sgt. Tim Cotton announced Wednesday.
Officer Mike Jewett, a graduate of Bangor High School who has been with the department since 1988, has announced his retirement.
After graduating from high school, Jewett enlisted in the U.S. Navy before going to work in Pittsfield, Cotton said. He started his career in Bangor in December 1988.
One of the department’s first certified motorcycle officers, Jewett was later assigned to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency before being selected as a canine handler, Cotton said. He was also a firearms instructor.
Jewett and his partner, Rex, patrolled the city on midnight watch, where, Cotton said, “Mike shared his humor and knowledge with younger officers during this time. He enjoyed his time with the a.m. crew.”
In 2005, Jewett was deployed overseas as a member of the Maine Air National Guard in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as part of the 1058 Gun Truck Company out of Forward Operations Base Speicher.
Jewett also won a yearlong battle with cancer and has been declared cancer-free by his medical team, Cotton said.
“He is thankful to all of his friends in the law enforcement and the Air National Guard family, his community and most of all his Eastern Maine Medical Center treatment team,” Cotton said.
