ROCKLAND, Maine — The city council is scheduled to vote Wednesday night on whether to install cobblestone pavers on a parking lot overlooking popular Sandy Beach.

This will be the second attempt to improve the parking lot. In 2010, the city spent several thousand dollars to install a plastic material that would allow grass to grow in the lot. That material, however, turned out to be too lightweight, said wastewater treatment plant superintendent Terry Pinto.

Interim City Manager Tom Luttrell said there are many theories on why the material did not result in a grass parking lot as the city had hoped, but he believes it came down to too much traffic for grass to handle.

The council will vote Monday night on spending $11,000 to install cobblestone pavers.
