Ole Miss probe’s bong pic of player

With No. 3 Ole Miss traveling to Knoxville to play Tennessee on Saturday, Rebels head coach Hugh Freeze seemed to downplay a photo of Rebels standout sophomore defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche smoking marijuana from a bong.

The photo surfaced on University of Tennessee football message boards and went viral Monday.

“I’m very aware of the picture and also when it was taken and where it was taken,” Freeze said. “We test our entire team on our drug-testing policy at the beginning of the season and then we have our follow-up tests throughout the course of the year. I’m super confident we handled each one the same and we enforce our policy very consistently.”

Nkemdiche, the former No. 1 recruit in the nation, did not comment on the authenticity or origin of the photo. He was suspended for part of the Music City Bowl in December 2013 along with his brother, Denzel, and Cody Prewitt.

Freeze said he is “super confident” the situation has been addressed correctly.

Suspended Irish WR Daniels to transfer

Notre Dame wide receiver DaVaris Daniels appears to be moving on with his football career.

Daniels tweeted Tuesday that he will “strap up for bigger things” after the school’s internal investigation of academic misconduct by five players resulted in season-long suspensions.

His father, Phillip Daniels, confirmed the announcement.

DaVaris Daniels entered fall camp as the Fighting Irish’s leading returning receiver with 80 career receptions for 1,235 yards and seven touchdowns, but on Aug. 15 he was one of the five players suspended from practice and team activities over the academic misconduct allegations.

The players were informed of the results of the investigation last week.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday during a weekly news conference that he had not heard about Daniels’ tweets, saying the only two of the five he had spoken with so far are junior cornerback KeiVarae Russell and defensive lineman Ishaq Williams.

Both Russell and Williams expressed to Kelly that they plan to return to Notre Dame next season.
