GARDINER, Maine — A man was taken to a hospital early Wednesday after a standoff with police on Marston Road ended peacefully.
Officers were dispatched to the residence late Tuesday to check on a man whom Gardiner police Chief James Toman described as being “down on their luck.”
As police approached the door, the man, whose identity was not disclosed, came to the door with a loaded weapon and told officers, “You need to leave so no one gets hurt,” Toman said in a statement.
A perimeter around the property was set up, Toman said, and State Police and Kennebec County sheriff’s deputies responded to back up Gardiner police.
Once the area was secure, police were able to establish phone contact with the man, and he eventually agreed to come outside unarmed to meet with police, according to Toman.
Nobody was injured, and the man was taken to an area hospital for evaluation, the chief said.
