ROCKLAND, Maine — The demolition of an existing building, which will pave the way for construction of a new complex for the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, is scheduled to begin Oct. 27.

The demolition is expected to take two days, and the remainder of the week will involve removing debris and clearing the downtown 21 Winter St. site.

Construction of the new 11,630-square-foot art complex will then start.

The new art center is expected to open in Rockland in summer 2016.

The $2.5 million project received the Rockland Planning Board approval on April 1.

The existing one-story building being demolished is a 12,213-square-foot structure that was built in 1923.

Demolition had been scheduled for early September but was delayed as the arts center worked with neighbors on the construction schedule.
