BIDDEFORD, Maine — Thursday night’s rain created a sinkhole on Elm Street in Biddeford.

By 11 p.m. Thursday, the hole was covered up with sheets of metal, dirt and sand around the edges.

Crews worked to fill the hole and repair the washout. The hole was about 8 feet long and 2-3 feet wide.

Biddeford’s city engineer said there is a sewer construction project going on in the area. He estimated the area got at least 2 inches of rain in less than an hour.

“We’ve been noticing that more and more lately, the storms are becoming real intense for a short period of time and creating much more impact than we’ve ever noticed in past years just because of the sheer volume of water,” said Tom Milligan, the city’s engineer.

Milligan said repairs would continue Friday. He said that detours will be in place, so it will be best for drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area.
