VASSALBORO, Maine — Drew Powell of Bangor and Nick Mazurek of Oceanside took different paths, but each earned a share of the Class A title on Saturday at the Maine Principals’ Association individual golf state championship played at Natanis Golf Course’s Arrowhead layout.

Powell fired a 35 on the back nine after opening with a 37, while Mazurek’s 33 on the front nine enabled him to overcome a 39 on the back as each player finished with an even-par 72.

Gavin Dugas of Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield claimed the Class B crown with the day’s lowest score among the boys, a 71. He took a three-stroke victory over Reese McFarlane of Cape Elizabeth.

Logan Thompson of Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln took home the Class C championship, shooting a 72 to hold off Adam Hachey of Winthrop by a single stroke.

In the girls competition, Hashilla Rivai of Thornton Academy in Saco opened with a 34 on the front nine on her way to a 70 and a five-stroke victory over Jenna Hallett of Presque Isle and Bailey Plourde of Lincoln Academy in Newcastle. Last year’s co-champions carded a 75.

Mazurek and Powell shared Class A honors after leading their respective teams on Natanis’ Tomahawk Course a week earlier.

Powell, a junior for the Rams, tied for fifth in Class A a year ago. Last summer, the junior finished second in the Maine Junior Amateur Championship and was third in the Maine Amateur Championship.

Mazurek, who also is a junior at the Rockland/Thomaston school, tied for third in the 2013 individual championship, also at Natanis.

Chris Billings of Cheverus High in Portland took third on Saturday with a 73, while Drew Kane of Scarborough (75) and Craig Smith of Falmouth (77) rounded out the top five.

In Class B, Dugas capped off his senior golf season by capturing the title. After leading the way in MCI’s third-place finish at the team competition, he shaved six strokes off his score to set the tone in Saturday’s boys tourney.

Drew Holt and Drew Long of Camden Hills in Rockport wound up tied for third place by shooting 76, while Conor Drouin of Oak Hill in Sabattus and MCI’s Eric Dugas deadlocked for fifth place at 78.

The Class C competition turned into a two-man duel between Thompson and Hachey. Thompson stormed onto the scene as a freshman, going out in 35 then firing a 37 on the back.

Houlton’s Cameron Clark and defending Class C winner Robbie Watson of Fort Fairfield tied for fourth at 76, while Anthony Owens of Winthrop wound up fifth with a 79.

Rivai earned a comfortable five-stroke victory in the girls division, which included 49 players. The Thornton Academy junior started well with a 34 on the front nine, then came back in 36.

Rivai shot a team-leading 74 a week earlier to help Thornton place fourth in the Class A team competition.

Erin Holmes of Greely High in Cumberland Center and Jordan LaPlume of Thornton tied for fourth at 76.
