BANGOR, Maine – Husson University limited Gallaudet to 155 total yards on Saturday afternoon, propelling the Eagles to a 12-6 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at the Winkin Sports Complex.
Husson (4-1, 3-0 ECFC) has assumed sole possession of first place in the league. Gallaudet falls to 2-3 and 2-1, respectively.
John Smith carried 23 times for 123 yards, including a 2-yard scoring plunge that capped a 10-play, 65-yard drive to put Husson ahead 6-0 in the first quarter.
Joe Seccareccia of Bangor hit Ryan Stroud of Dover-Foxcroft with a 3-yard TD toss to close out a 10-play, 42-march that made it 12-0 late in the second quarter.
Gallaudet cut the lead in half when David Jones found Myles Goldberg for a 13-yard score in the fourth quarter, but Josiah Hartley of Bangor recovered the onside kick and the Eagles ran out the clock.
Logan Steward of Hampden finished with 68 yards on 16 carries for Husson, while Stroud had three catches for 76 yards.
Ellis Throckmorton of Bangor led the Husson defense with five tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss. Marquis Jimenez made an interception and Bryant Wade of Fairfield logged five tackles, a forced fumble and a recovery.
The win was Husson’s first over Gallaudet since 2008.
MMA 13, Coast Guard 7
At Castine, Joseph DiBiase capped off a 13-play, 68-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run that put the Mariners ahead for good in a defense-dominated New England Football Conference game at Ritchie Field.
Maine Maritime Academy (2-3, 1-2 NEFC) held Coast Guard (3-4, 2-2 NEFC) to 313 total yards and came up with five second-half turnovers, including four interceptions. Cody McDonald of Lincoln, Thomas Kinton of York, Colin Joyce of Westbrook and Andrew Cavanaugh each picked off a pass.
Quarterback Michael Fahey led the Mariners offense with 99 rushing yards and a 2-yard TD run on MMA’s opening possession. Jacob Doolan of Fairfield, Maine added 60 yards on 16 carries.
Derek Victory threw a 17-yard scoring strike to Bryan Popp for Coast Guard.
The Mariners, who led NCAA Division III in rushing, managed only 248 yards.
McDonald made seven tackles and an interception for MMA, while John Doyon of Hampden, Kinton and Robert Bradley Jr. posted seven tackles apiece.
Coast Guard’s Kyle Wood recorded a game-high 15 tackles, followed by Victor Rizzardi with 13.
