Benefit race

INDIAN ISLAND — The Ralph K. Thomas 8K, 2.5-mile Walk and 1-mile Fun Run will take place 9-11:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Penobscot Nation Community Building, 12 Wabanaki Way. The Fun Run for children is free.

Native made traditional baskets will be awarded to the first male and female winners of the 8K race. Hats will be available to the first 75 registrants.

The race route is a road and trail running along the Penobscot River and into Old Town.

Activities for children age 7 and up will take place during the race, so parents can have a stress-free run.

The race will raise money for diabetes prevention and awareness. Diabetes disproportionately affects tribal members and the funds raised will be put to use in the Penobscot Nation community, and a portion will be donated to the American Diabetes Association, organizers said.

Ralph Thomas is an inspiration to many Penobscot runners and is in the Maine Running Hall of Fame, organizers said. He has participated in the race in his honor since it was established.
