SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine — Nicholas Mangan of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Leah Thorvilson of Little Rock, Arkansas, were winners Sunday of the 13th annual MDI Marathon road race.
Adam Goode of Bangor and Nicole Varble of Buffalo, New York, won the event’s accompanying half-marathon as more than 1,000 runners completed the two races.
Mangan, 26, ran the 26.2-mile marathon route from downtown Bar Harbor to downtown Southwest Harbor in 2 hours, 38 minutes and 53 seconds.
His pace of 6:04 per mile enabled him to defeat six-time race champion David Herr of Canaan, Vermont, by 62 seconds. The 49-year-old Herr, who finished fourth in last year’s race, was timed in 2:39:55.
The top Maine men’s finisher was Matt Homich of Ellsworth, third overall in 2:44:19.
Thorvilson, 35, won the women’s title and placed eighth overall among the 609 marathon finishers in 2:49:13, nearly four minutes ahead of defending champion Leah Frost of Glover, Vermont.
Frost, who had won the Maine Marathon two weeks ago, was attempting to win that marathon double for the second straight year but had to settle for second place and 10th overall at MDI in 2:53:05.
Sarah Mulcahy of Baring Plantation was the fastest Maine woman in the race, placing third in the division and 22nd overall in the marathon field with a 3:04:48 clocking.
Goode, 31, cruised to victory among the 396 runners who finished the half-marathon with a winning time of 1:12:09.
That was nearly 10 minutes ahead of second-place Will Powell of Portland, who was timed in 1:21:58.
Varble, 26, had a closer battle in the women’s division before winning with a time of 1:33:47, good for seventh place overall.
Varble’s time was 15 seconds faster than runner-up Dana Mackey of Dorchester, Massachusetts, ninth overall in 1:34:02.
The fastest Maine woman in the half-marathon was Shelby Greene of Columbia Falls, fourth in the women’s division and 17th overall in 1:39:22.
