EAST MILLINOCKET, Maine — An unidentified man and woman were being questioned by police Tuesday night in connection with a suspected methamphetamine lab allegedly discovered in their Main Street apartment.
Investigators with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency had been assisting East Millinocket police with processing evidence at the rear, second-floor apartment at 81 Main St. since the early afternoon, according to Peter Arno, commander of the MDEA’s Division II.
“We have found evidence that is strongly indicative of methamphetamine manufacture,” Arno said Tuesday.
As of 6:30 p.m., investigators were combing through the apartment and expected to be there several more hours. Two large drug enforcement trucks also were there.
Police also had blocked the entrance to the town recycling facility and dump in connection with the investigation.
Arno declined to identify the two people being questioned or their relationship to the investigation, but he said that they lived in the apartment.
And while Arno said that the division’s methamphetamine lab team was there, he would not say what led police to the apartment or whether any drugs had been seized.
East Millinocket Police Chief Cameron McDunnah declined to comment at the scene, saying he would likely issue information on Wednesday.
Neighbors around the apartment building, including auto body repair shop operator and Selectmen Clint Linscott, said they suspected criminal activity was occurring there. They said the apartment was being visited frequently by individuals for short stays at all hours.
