SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A suspicious device that appeared to be a grenade was found at the Towne Motel on Madison Avenue on Tuesday, police said.

Police were called at 11:30 a.m. after a groundskeeper picking up leaves saw the device wedged near an oil vent pipe, Skowhegan Police Chief Ted Blais said.

A Maine State Police bomb squad was called in to investigate, Blais said, and the motel was evacuated.

Blais said the device had a wire that looked suspect, but when a bomb squad member removed it, police could tell that the device was a toy.

The chief added it’s unclear who put the device at the motel and why. No injuries were reported.
