HOLDEN, Maine — Police are seeking assistance from the public in their effort to locate a vehicle and driver involved in a hit-and-run accident early Thursday morning.

The accident happened at 5:19 a.m., as James Furrough, 35, of Holden was bicycling in the breakdown lane on Main Road, heading into and just before the Brewer town line, Holden police Sgt. Eugene Fizell said Thursday evening.

Furrough was struck by the mirror of a small car, headed in the same direction, Fizell said. He said the car continued on its way toward Brewer but sent Furrough and his bicycle to the ground.

The accident was witnessed by a passing motorist, who immediately called Holden police, Fizell said.

Furrough was taken to the hospital by personal vehicle, where he was treated and released for injuries that included fractured ribs, a concussion and a shoulder injury, the sergeant said, adding that Furrough’s bicycle was damaged.

The witness was not able to provide much detail about the hit-and-run vehicle due to the heavy rain and the darkness, he said.

The passenger side mirror of the offending vehicle was torn from the passenger side and police have determined that it came from a 2000 or newer Subaru, possibly a Legacy, Fizell said.

The accident remains under investigation by Holden police Officer Ken Dowling, with assistance from Sgt. Fizell.

Police are asking for help to identify the hit and run vehicle, Fizell said. Anyone who may have seen the accident or who knows anything about a Subaru Legacy recently losing a passenger side mirror is asked to call Holden police at 843-5442.
