Michigan cuts student ticket prices
Michigan plans to drastically slash student ticket prices for next season in an attempt to boost dwindling attendance.
Season ticket packages will be cut by 37 percent to $185 for seven games in 2015. That figure is down from $295 this year.
Students who buy tickets will also get a shirt and other offers, and the athletic department is exploring ways to help those in financial need be able to afford tickets.
Student ticket sales declined sharply from 19,851 in 2013 to 11,569 this year.
Michigan’s student season ticket his year is priced higher than any Big Ten school this year. Ohio State currently has the next most expensive tickets at $252, followed by Penn State ($218) and Wisconsin ($188). The $175 ticket for 2015 will match the current price at Iowa and Michigan State.
“A nearly 40 percent reduction in ticket prices is, I think it’s fair to say, unprecedented,” athletic director Dave Brandon told the Michigan Daily.
“We listen. We’ve been listening. … We really learned that two really important components to re-engaging with our students in trying to create a more robust, more enthusiastic and larger student section for next year’s football season was price and strength of schedule.”
General non-student ticket prices will remain at 2014 levels.
“This new pricing is the result of positive dialogue between our students and the athletic department,” Brandon said in a statement. “This price adjustment is another example of our commitment to continue building a stronger connection with our students and the university community.”
Brandon has been under fire recently for the school’s handling of a concussion situation involving quarterback Shane Morris and also for the football team’s struggles on the field. The Wolverines are 3-4 heading into Saturday’s game at rival Michigan State.
