LEWISTON, Maine — A man shot by police officers Friday night in Lewiston after he would not put down his gun is being treated at Central Maine Medical Center for his injuries, according to a police lieutenant.

Albert Crowley, 20, of Lewiston allegedly was involved in a domestic violence incident that took place in an apartment at 1 Knox St. at about 8 p.m. The woman who made an emergency call to police told them she had been assaulted and said Crowley may be armed with a gun, Lt. Michael McGonagle of the Lewiston Police Department said Saturday afternoon.

Three responding officers saw Crowley walking away from the apartment, traveling toward Kennedy Park. He had his hands in his pocket, McGonagle said.

“They made several demands for him to take his hands out of his pocket, raise them and ordered him to stop moving,” McGonagle said. “All of which he failed to do. … At some point, the gun came out and shots were fired.”

Witnesses heard about a dozen shots, according to a report from WGME, which also reported that Lewiston Sun Journal staffers working in their offices about 150 yards from the scene of the shooting took cover when the shooting began.

“Three of us dropped to the floor because we were exposed,” Mary Delamater, a copy editor, said. “We didn’t know where the gunfire was going to go or if it was going to continue or whether it was going to come toward us or not. We’re surrounded by glass, so we all got below the windows and stayed there until we heard the police on the scanner say the scene has been secured.”

The officers involved in the shooting are identified as Cpl. Michael Dumond, a 13-year veteran; Officer Brian Bourgoin, a 5-year veteran; and Officer Zachary Provost, who has been with the force for two years. As is standard procedure, police say all three are on administrative leave, and the attorney general’s office is investigating.

McGonagle did not have information about Crowley’s current medical condition, and neither did an official contacted Saturday at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
