Lend a creche BANGOR — After a hiatus of several years, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will host a Creche Exhibit Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5-6, at the church, corner of Grandview Avenue and Essex Street. Tina Havard, who is assisting with the organization of the event, is seeking those who would like to loan creches for the exhibit. Harvard said the exhibit is expected to have 200 creches on display. Craft, Antique Fair BANGOR — The Zonta Club of Bangor will hold its 36th annual Marketplace Craft and Antique Fair, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Nov 8-9, at the Brewer Auditorium. The event will feature more than 70 vendors for Christmas shopping and lunch of homemade chowder and other treats at the Zonta Cafe. A silent auction and food to go — sweets and take home meals — will be available. Door prizes will be awarded and a 50-50 raffle will be conducted. Zonta Club of Bangor, is part of an International organization working to improve the status of women worldwide. It provides support to local organizations such as the Girl Scouts, Womancare-Spruce Run-Rape Response and Sarah’s House of Maine. Halloween Party BANGOR — Bangor Parks and Recreation will host its annual Halloween Party on Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Parks and Recreation Center, 647 Main St. The event will offer games, activities, prizes and the Haunted Chamber. New shuttle service BANGOR — The Sunshine Club for Children’s Holiday Marketplace and Craft Fair will be held 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Anah Shrine Center, 581 Main St. The event will feature gifts, collectibles, antiques, crafts, special drawings and lunch. New this year is a free shuttle service for those who park at the Cross Insurance Center headquarters (the former Bangor Daily News building) on Buck Street. The shuttle will run every half-hour 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Admission to the Marketplace event is $1, free to children 12 and under. Proceeds from the event provide transportation for children and their families to Shriners hospitals. Book fair BANGOR — Bangor Christian Schools will host the All-Star Book Fair 7-8:30 a.m. and 2-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Nov. 3-7, in the auditorium of Bangor Baptist Church. A Sneak Peak Breakfast will be offered at 7 a.m. Monday, Nov 3. The school also will host family social and fellowship time at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. The event will feature ice cream sundaes. A special drawing will be held with the winner receiving a free basket of reading books. MDA fundraiser BANGOR — The Muscular Dystrophy Association, with headquarters in Westbrook, is seeking business and community leaders in the Bangor area to take part in the association’s “lock-up” fundraiser in which community leaders are raising “bail” — donations for children and adults living with muscle disease. Families served by the association attend the event as the “honorary judge” and get to meet and interact with those people raising money for their fight. The Westbrook office provides services to 72 families in Penobscot County living with muscle disease and more than 600 across the entire Maine. Services include multi-disciplinary clinics at Eastern Maine Medical Center, support group, therapy consultations, durable medical equipment, MDA Summer Camp in Sanford, and so much more. Business and community leaders in the Bangor area are invited to join the MDA fundraiser 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Seadog Brewing Company in Bangor. Gem and Mineral Show BREWER — The Penobscot Mineral and Lapidary Club will hold its 10th annual Gem and Mineral Show 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Brewer Auditorium on Wilson St. Approximately 20 vendors will offer for purchase rocks, mineral specimens, gemstones, beads, gold and silver jewelry and other related products. The show also will feature silent auctions every hour, door prizes throughout each day and a raffle for a Maine watermelon tourmaline pendant. Food and refreshments will be available at the concession stand. Admission to the show is $ 2, free to children under 12 accompanied by an adult. Community cantata BUCKSPORT — The Franklin Street United Methodist Church wants to sponsor a community cantata to celebrate the Christmas season. The cantata is open to those of all faiths, ages and musicality. Organizers said the music has a variety of styles that are easy to learn. There are some solo parts, narrations and a song for the children sing. Those who are interested in taking part are invited to preview of the music at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at the church, 71 Franklin Street. Ash borer talk ORONO — February snow caused the postponement of a public presentation on “The Emerald Ash Borer in Maine: An Assessment of Efforts to Increase Awareness and Action.” This program has been rescheduled and will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Page Farm and Home Museum on the University of Maine campus. In an effort to prevent the spread of this invasive insect pest, researchers across the state are collaborating to educate Maine residents and visitors about the potentially disastrous effect that the emerald ash borer could have on our own economically and culturally important ash trees. Presenting a report on the project will be Jessica Leahy, associate professor of human dimensions of natural resources at the University of Maine; Crista Straub, assistant professor of Human Ecology at Unity College; and Ann Gibbs, Acting Director of the Maine Department of agriculture, conservation and forestry, division of animal and plant health. The program is one in a series of free monthly public forums sponsored by the Friends of Dr. Edith Marion Patch.
