ELLSWORTH, Maine — Two Ellsworth men were arrested late last week on drug charges when one of them allegedly sold prescription medication to another along a popular footpath, according to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
Police were conducting an investigation of Joshua L. Cobb, 26, when MDEA officers witnessed him go to a local pharmacy and pick up a prescription for Suboxone on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 24, according to Peter Arno, commander with the MDEA.
Agents followed Cobb to outer State Street, where Cobb parked, got out of his vehicle and walked along the footpath, which runs parallel to a set of train tracks, Arno said. Cobb allegedly walked north past the high school and met John A. Molina, 32, of Ellsworth on the path near Lakes Lane.
“[Police] saw the two meet briefly and exchange something [and] then leave on foot in separate directions,” Arno said Monday in an email.
Police separately stopped the men a few minutes later, finding “a small quantity” of Suboxone in Molina’s possession, Arno said. Cobb also had the drug, Arno added, and was five units shy of the quantity in the prescription he had just picked up at the pharmacy.
Cobb was arrested on a Class B felony charge of unlawful trafficking in drugs, which in Maine is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $20,000.
Molina was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of illegal possession of drugs. Both men were taken to Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth, where Molina subsequently was released on bail and where Cobb still was being held Monday afternoon, Arno said.
