CARIBOU, Maine — Less than a week after an early fall snowstorm blanketed much of Maine with more than a foot of snow, fresh snowfall is expected in northern Maine late Thursday into Friday.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm watches and warnings for northern and western counties.

According to the weather service, a low-pressure front bringing rain is expected to change over to snow late Thursday night and into Friday.

Winter storm warnings have been issued for Aroostook and northern Somerset and Piscataquis counties, while a winter storm watch is in effect for northern Penobscot, southern Aroostook, northern Franklin and Oxford and central Somerset counties.

Heavy accumulation is expected, with some areas expected to receive up to a foot of snow.
