Racing tours plan 150-lap doubleheader at Oxford

The American Canadian Tour and the Pro All-Stars Series have reached an agreement to hold a doubleheader at Oxford Plains Speedway on April 18, 2015.

There will be 150-lap races for both the ACT Late Models and the PASS Super Late Models and they will kick off the OPS season.

“This agreement between PASS and ACT is going to be very good for the New England and Canadian race fans, and certainly for full fender race teams,” said Tom Mayberry, president of PASS and owner of the Oxford Plains Speedway, in a press release. “ACT Late Model teams spent many years racing at Oxford and they have always put on some terrific shows. This will also allow a number of the ACT teams, who have have PASS Super Late Models, to compete with the stars of PASS. We see this as a win-win for teams and fans.”

The agreement also includes a clearing of the ACT schedule on the weekend of the Oxford 250, which will be held on Aug. 29-30, 2015. There will be no ACT race that weekend like there had been in the past.

Winston’s attorney wants delay in hearing

The attorney for Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has requested that school officials delay his upcoming student conduct code hearing.

Winston potentially could face four violations for his conduct in an alleged sexual assault in December 2012.

Winston’s attorney, David Cornwell of Atlanta, requested the delay in a letter he sent to Florida State officials on Thursday. Cornwell, according to ESPN.com, did not specify how much time he would need to prepare for the hearing.

Florida State officials notified Cornwell and the woman’s attorneys earlier this week that the hearing would take place the week of Nov. 17.

Under Florida State’s student conduct rules and regulations, the university can proceed with a hearing even if Winston does not attend.

Winston was accused of sexual assault last December. In November 2013, the state’s attorney announced that it was opening an investigation into the accusation. The investigation was completed a month later, and no charges were filed.

NHL participation at 2018 Winter Games still uncertain

BANGKOK — The participation of NHL players at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics remains on ice but officials hope to reach an agreement in time to avoid a repeat of the standoff before Sochi.

NHL players have competed at the last five Winter Olympics but were in doubt for this year’s Sochi Winter Olympics until a deal was struck seven months before the opening faceoff.

Many NHL team owners are opposed to the idea because the league is forced to shut down for two weeks in the middle of their season as the game’s biggest names risk injury while representing their countries.

International Ice Hockey Federation Vice President Bob Nicholson told reporters at the inaugural Association of National Olympic Committees awards ceremony on Friday that he was hopeful a new agreement could be reached.

Ravens’ Suggs fined for late hit

Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs was fined $8,268 for a late hit on Pittsburgh Steelers running back LeGarrette Blount during Sunday’s game, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday.

Blount said this week that Suggs is “known to be a dirty player.”

Suggs was called for unnecessary roughness on the play in question, and it led to some pushing and shoving by both teams.

Suggs said after the game the play was not dirty, claiming Blount was still up and moving when he made the hit.
