ROCKPORT, Maine — A Camden man is behind bars after police said he broke into a Rockport home and sexually assaulted a resident on Sunday morning.
Eli Z. Kemberling, 22, was arrested about 3 a.m. Sunday and charged with burglary, aggravated criminal trespass, unlawful sexual contact, theft and violating a condition of release.
According to an affidavit filed by Rockport police, the 42-year-old woman reported that she was asleep in her bed when she felt someone touching her. She at first thought it was her husband, but when she opened her eyes, she saw a man wearing a mask, according to the affidavit.
The woman screamed, and Kemberling ran out of the room and down the stairs, according to the affidavit. The woman’s husband, who had fallen asleep on the couch, woke up and allegedly tackled Kemberling at the bottom of the stairs. Kemberling allegedly had a large knife that the husband was able to kick away after the Kemberling dropped it.
The husband began punching the masked intruder until Kemberling identified himself, according to the affidavit. The husband knew who Kemberling was, but the affidavit did not provide further details.
Rockport police arrived at the Meadow Street home and arrested Kemberling. When asked what his plans were, Kemberling smiled and said he wanted to “do damage,” according to the affidavit.
Kemberling was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport first after making suicidal threats and then to Knox County Jail in Rockland.
A blood test showed that Kemberling’s blood-alcohol level was 0.17.
Kemberling made his initial court appearance on the charges Monday afternoon in Rockland District Court. Judge Beth Dobson ordered him held without bail on a motion filed by Assistant District Attorney Christopher Fernald to revoke Kimberling’s deferred disposition on earlier charges of theft and operating under the influence.
