GARDINER, Maine — A home on Libby Hill Road was leveled by fire on Sunday, officials said.
Crews from six departments were dispatched to the blaze around 1:45 p.m., Gardiner Fire Chief Al Nelson said.
Nelson said the homeowner was performing plumbing work in the basement, fixing a pipe using a torch. He had gone to a store to get more parts and returned to find the house ablaze, Nelson said.
Crews were able to knock the fire down quickly but the house was deemed a total loss, Nelson said.
Firefighters from Gardiner, Augusta, Togus, Pittston, Farmingdale and Randolph responded to the scene.
