PORTLAND, Maine — U.S. Coast Guard and Portland firefighters who received a report of a lobster boat on fire Monday afternoon found the blaze had been doused by the captain by the time they arrived.

Portand dispatch received a call at about 12:20 p.m. Monday that a boat with one person aboard was on fire near Cushing Island, just south of Peaks Island.

Two Coast Guard vessels launched from Coast Guard Station South Portland, and the Portland Fire Department launched their boat to the scene, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Jason Smith. A helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod in Massachusetts was also diverted to the scene, according to a release.

When crews arrived, the fire aboard The Hard Bottom, a 30-foot lobster boat based in Portland, had already been extinguished by the captain, Smith said Tuesday. The captain’s name was unavailable.

The disabled vessel was towed by the Coast Guard to Union Pier. No injuries were reported.
