Florida State players left crash site

Florida State starting cornerbacks P.J. Williams and Ronald Darby left the scene of an automobile accident last month, The New York Times reported Friday.

According to the report, a car driven by Williams, with Darby and an unnamed passenger also in the vehicle, collided with another vehicle in the early morning of Oct. 5. Both cars were totaled in the accident, and all three people in Williams’ car left the scene.

Williams later returned to the scene. But Tallahassee Police Department officers did not test him for alcohol use, and their report minimized the impact of the crash on Ian Keith, the driver of the other car. Keith said in an interview that the airbag had cut and bruised his hands.

The Times report further stated that university police did not have jurisdiction in the case but sent officers to the scene. They did not write a report that night, and Florida State said their role was too minor to require a report.

Kings lose defenseman to broken finger

The Los Angeles Kings will be without defenseman Alec Martinez for an indefinite period after he injured a finger while blocking a shot during Thursday night’s 2-0 loss to the Dallas Stars and had surgery.

The loss of Martinez further depletes the Kings’ defensive corps. After Martinez left the game, Los Angeles played with a five-man rotation of defensemen for the rest of the night.

Kings defenseman Slavy Voynov continues to serve an indefinite suspension after he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, but the team hopes to get defenseman Robyn Regehr back from an injury for the weekend. The Kings also recently signed veteran free-agent Jamie McBain to a league-minimum contract.

Rose day-to-day with mild hamstring strain

The Chicago Bulls received pretty good news Friday regarding the left hamstring point guard Derrick Rose injured in Thursday night’s game.

After an examination Friday, the Bulls determined it was a mild strain, the Chicago Tribune reported. No MRI was needed, and Rose is listed as day-to-day.

The Bulls’ next game is a home contest on Saturday against the Indiana Pacers. Coach Tom Thibodeau would not speculate on Rose’s availability for that game, according to the report. The Bulls have been conservative regarding Rose’s playing time following injuries in the past.

Rose had 20 points on 5-for-14 shooting from the floor before tweaking his hamstring late in the 100-93 win over the Toronto Raptors.

Jets’ Ryan fined $100,000 for profanity

The NFL fined New York Jets coach Rex Ryan $100,000 for shouting a profanity that was caught on camera following the Jets’ victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday.

Ryan is a repeat offender of the NFL’s rule against swearing, which is why the fine is so high. He had been fined $75,000 by the NFL in 2011 for yelling at a fan and was fined $50,000 by the Jets for displaying his middle finger in a picture taken in 2010.

On Sunday, a camera captured Ryan shouting at someone as the game ended.

It’s unclear which person Ryan’s words were directed toward, but he was upset when Steelers safety Mike Mitchell tried to jump over the line to block a Jets’ center snap when the Jets were in the victory formation. Ryan later called the move “bush league.”
