PORTLAND, Maine — A local man was arrested Friday when he reportedly opened his door at the YMCA while holding bags of heroin that he expected to sell and found police officers instead.
Frank Gerry, 43, of Portland was charged with unlawful trafficking of scheduled drugs, a Class B crime, according to a news release issued Saturday by the Maine State Police.
Gerry was selling heroin from the Young Men’s Christian Association on Forest Avenue and from his car, Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police, said in the release.
Agents with the Cumberland District Task Force of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency on Friday investigated reports that a man who owned a black Honda Acura and rented a room at the YMCA was selling heroin.
“When agents knocked on Gerry’s apartment door, Gerry opened the door holding several small bags of suspected heroin, apparently expecting a customer,” McCausland said. “Agents arrested Gerry without incident.”
The approximate street value of the seized heroin is $8,000, the release said.
Gerry remained Saturday at the Cumberland County Jail unable to
post $10,000 dollars.
If convicted, Gerry faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.
