WEST BATH, Maine — A Brunswick man was treated at a local hospital Wednesday morning after his vehicle hit black ice and rolled several times along Route 1.

Responding public safety personnel reported the bridge over the New Meadows River was very icy.

Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Department Chief Deputy Brett Strout said the crash was reported at 5:07 a.m. Mark Bernier, 55, of Brunswick was traveling north on Route 1 in West Bath when his 2000 Ford Ranger hit black ice on the bridge in the area of the New Meadows offramp, spun around and flipped over several times before landing on the driver’s side door.

Bernier was able to crawl out of the vehicle. He suffered injuries to his head, neck and chest area, according to Strout. Brunswick Officer Julia Gillespie arrived first on scene and started first aid for Bernier.

Bath Rescue transported Bernier to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, where he was treated and released, according to a hospital representative.
