BANGOR, Maine — A local woman wanted in connection with an Oct. 5 stabbing that left an Ohio Street woman with a punctured lung made her first court appearance Monday at the Penobscot Judicial Center after being arrested in Rhode Island.

Cassandra Means, 26, of Bangor was charged with elevated aggravated assault.

District Court Judge John Lucy set bail at $50,000 cash.

Means was not asked to enter a plea to the Class A crime because she has not yet been indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury.

Her next court date was set for Jan. 13.

She remained at the Penobscot County Jail on Monday night unable to post bail. Means arrived at the jail Friday, according to jail personnel.

A warrant was issued for her arrest Oct. 13. The circumstances surrounding her arrest were not discussed in court Monday. Neither was a possible motive for the altercation, but the victim allegedly was in a relationship with the father of Means’ child, according to Stephen Burlock, assistant district attorney for Penobscot County.

The fracas that led to the stabbing began in the parking lot of a Harlow Street nightclub after drinking hours ended, according to a previously published report.

Means showed up about an hour later at the victim’s home and attacked her, Burlock told the judge Monday.

“The defendant hit the victim in the face with the heel of her high-heeled shoe, then stabbed her in the back,” the prosecutor said in seeking the high cash bail. “The victim was admitted to the hospital.”

Burlock said Means knew police were looking for her, but she fled the state.

Means denied leaving Maine to avoid being prosecuted through defense attorney Arrain Stockdell of Orono, who represented her at Monday’s hearing. The attorney requested bail of $10,000 cash.

If convicted, Means faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
