PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Sara Martin has been named the new head softball coach at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Martin replaces Peter Coffin, who resigned in August after leading the program for three years.

The hiring marks a return to the Presque Isle campus for Martin, who previously served as the Owls’ assistant softball and basketball coach in 2010.

“We are excited to have Sara on board. I think she is going to be a great addition to our staff,” said UMPI athletic director Paul Stone. “She has been around softball all her life either as a player or coach and is really excited to help us build a program here at UMPI.”

Martin is the owner of FitLife Personal Fitness Training where she develops fitness programs for a wide range of clients, and she is the co-owner of Northern Athletic Supply in Presque Isle.

Martin also most recently served as parks and recreation director in Limestone from 2010 to 2014.

Martin competed in five conference championships as a softball and basketball player in the Yankee and North Atlantic conferences while at Central Maine Community College in Auburn and the University of Maine at Farmington. Both of Martin’s parents are long-time coaches, and she has worked in and around athletics her entire life.

She served as assistant athletic director and sports information director at CMCC in 2008, and she also has worked at various camps, fitness centers as well as was the varsity softball coach at Mount Abram High School in Salem.

Martin earned her undergraduate degree from UMF in community health education in 2008 and is one course away from earning her master’s degree in sport management from the United States Sports Academy.

“I look forward to bringing energy and excitement for the game of softball to this program and building on the great work previous coaches before me have done,” said Martin. “I’m excited to meet the girls and begin working with them.”
