BELMONT, Maine — A Belmont man who allegedly assaulted his former domestic partner over the weekend has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident, according to the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at about 9 p.m. Saturday at a Belmont home, according to a media release issued Monday by Lt. Jason Trundy. Deputy Kevin Littlefield and Sgt. James Greeley spoke with a woman at the home who said that Christopher Shaffer, 39, had become upset after an argument and assaulted her by pulling her hair, kicking and punching her.

“The victim also indicated Mr. Shaffer had threatened to kill her during the altercation,” Trundy wrote.

After the investigation, the officers charged Shaffer with domestic violence assault and domestic violence terrorizing. He was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast and remained in police custody Tuesday, with his bail set at $1,000 cash. Shaffer has been moved to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, a jail official said Tuesday.

According to BDN archives, Shaffer was sentenced to a year in prison with all but 45 days suspended after being convicted in 2012 of the reckless violation of a protective order. In that incident, he was arrested after head-butting a woman and throwing her keys and purse into the snow. That woman had a protection from abuse order in place against Shaffer.
